Gunmen kill two police officers and a civilian in Imo

On Tuesday morning, gunmen shot at two police officers who were on duty in Akabo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of ​​Imo State.

Eyewitness reports said the fleeing gunmen also shot a passerby at a checkpoint at Ama-John junction, Akabo, which is along the Owerri-Okigwe-Enugu highway.

PUNCH Metro gathered from witness reports that the gunmen who attacked in the early hours of Tuesday took officers on duty by surprise.

A witness to the incident said: “This morning there was panic some minutes after 6:00am within the Akabo (Ama-John) axis along the Owerri-Okigwe-Enugu road when a group of gunmen killed two policemen. on duty and a passerby. “The gunmen were traveling on the Sienna bus and drove away after shooting at the police officers.”

Spokesman of Imo State Police Command, ASP Henry Okoye, who confirmed the incident, said: “The Commissioner of Imo State Police Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has deployed the Special Tactical Squad of the Command and equipped it with the operational resources and intelligence available to go all in synergy with other security agencies and take drastic measures against the hoodlums responsible for the unprovoked and unjustified attack and murder of Mobile Police officers who were carrying out stop and searches in Akabo in the area of ​​the Ikeduru Local Government in Imo State.”

“The tragic incident was carried out in the early hours of Tuesday by thugs suspected of being members of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN), who attacked the numerous officers, shooting sporadically. “The officers fought bravely but sadly two staff and one civilian were fatally injured.”

“Following the tragic incident, the Commissioner of Imo State Police Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, together with DC Operations, took police officers to the crime scene for on-spot assessment of the incident. “An intense operation is underway in the area for possible arrest and prosecution of the fleeing hoodlums responsible for the senseless act of violence.”

“The police commissioner has set up a high-level investigation team and tasked them to carry out a thorough investigation to uncover the perpetrators of the attack.”

He also said: “The lifeless bodies of the affected officers and a civilian have been recovered and deposited in a morgue for preservation.”
