Willemse strike for Boks and Stormers

Springbok and DHL Stormers playmaker Damian Willemse is expected to miss the remainder of the Vodacom URC season, as well as the July Test series and the 2024 Rugby Championship.

Willemse suffered a finger injury during the win against Connacht in Galwa, securing the Stormers’ place in the Vodacom URC playoffs.

Although it was expected to be a simple sprain, according to Red24A scan revealed the two-time Bok world champion has injured ligaments in his fingers and will require surgery.

The recovery process is expected to keep Willemse out for four months, meaning he may only return to be part of the Boks’ end-of-year tour.

The news of his injury will be a blow to both the Stormers and the Boks. The 26-year-old was the first-choice defender at Rugby World Cup 2023 and has primarily donned the number 12 shirt for the Stormers this season.

The Stormers have one more round in the URC to play the Lions in Cape Town next Saturday, before facing the challenge of an away play-off against Munster, Glasgow Warriors, Leinster or the Vodacom Bulls.

Meanwhile, the Boks may have to turn to veteran Willie le Roux for the July series against Ireland as the 34-year-old is currently in sensational form for the Bulls.
