Kano mosque explosion death toll rises to 17

A total of 17 of the 25 victims of the Gadan village mosque attack have lost their lives so far, with another eight still receiving treatment in hospital.

Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, who confirmed the casualty figure to PUNCH Online on Tuesday, said two more victims died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

“Sixteen of the victims who died were among the 24 taken to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, while the remaining victim who died was taken to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital by their relatives.

“We have been citing 24 as the total number of victims, but the actual number of those involved was 25, including the one who died at AKTH,” Haruna said.

Meanwhile, a Shari’a High Court sitting at Rijiyar Zaki, Kano, had on Monday ordered the remand of the 38-year-old man, Shafi’u Abubakar, who allegedly set fire to the Gadan village mosque at a Correctional Centre. .

The court subsequently adjourned the matter to May 31, 2024 for hearing.

The accused, who lives in Gadan village in Gezawa Local Government Area of ​​Kano State, was charged with grievous bodily harm and culpable homicide.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu expressed his condolences to the Government and people of Kano State over the incident.

Tinubu’s message of condolence is contained in a statement signed on Tuesday by his special adviser on media and publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, titled “President Tinubu mourns the victims of the Kano mosque fire.”

The incident occurred on May 15 after a man set fire to a mosque with nearly 40 worshipers inside, the Kano State Police Command said.

The 38-year-old man reportedly set fire to the mosque after dousing it with gasoline and locking the doors.

Announcing the suspect’s arrest, police said the motive for the attack was a family dispute over inheritance distribution.

Reacting to the incident, the Presidency said Tinubu “condemns the act of arson that led to this tragic event and directs law enforcement agencies to ensure diligent investigation and prosecution of the suspects.”

He commiserated with the bereaved families and all those affected and prayed for a speedy recovery of the injured.
