A man who tried to evade arrest by Metropolitan Police on Beach Road, Brookes Hill, in the Eastern Cape, died after running into the ocean.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said that at around 8.30pm on Monday, two men robbed a 36-year-old man of his cell phone at gunpoint.

“The suspects asked for his mobile phone and fled. However, patrolling Metropolitan Police officers became aware of the incident and pursued the suspects,” Beetge said.

He said a 39-year-old man was arrested on charges of armed robbery, while the other ditched the firearm and ran across the street toward the beach.

“During an attempt to evade arrest, he ran into the sea and hid behind large rocks. Due to poor sea conditions, SAPS Search and Rescue and the SAPS Diving Unit were unable to reach him.

“Unfortunately, the suspect’s body washed ashore this morning (Tuesday) at King’s Beach. The cell phone was recovered and a replica firearm was confiscated,” Beetge said.

The investigation continues.
