Christian Petracca reacts to ‘that’ Harley Reid tackle, laughs at Eagle talent, Melbourne Demons, West Coast, The West Australian, Pick 1, latest news, reactions

Melbourne superstar Christian Petracca knew Harley Reid’s defense would “immediately go viral” after the West Coast youngster’s spectacular performance last Sunday.

Midway through the third quarter against the Demons, the 2023 #1 Pick managed to fend off not only Petracca, but also Oliver on the same play, showing more than just shades of an excellent Dustin Martin.

Reid finished the match with two goals from his 21 disposals, 10 goal involvements and seven clearances.

The four-time Australian discussed highlights from the match on Fox Footy’s AFL 360 on Tuesday night.

“To be honest, I took my hat off for running so fast (chasing Reid),” Petracca said while laughing.

“He is a generational talent; an absolute phenomenon; I laughed a lot afterwards.”

Insanely, Reid’s defense wasn’t even the biggest talking point for the 19-year-old on Sunday, with his first-quarter goal straight from a center punt sending Optus Stadium and fans across Australia into a frenzy. .

And unfortunately for Petracca, he was the one left trying to catch Round 5’s Rising Star nominee.

“When he kicked the goal, (former teammate) Jayden Hunt was on the wing and he just looked at me; we started laughing, there wasn’t much else he could do,” Petracca added.

When asked by AFL 360 panelist and Herald Sun chief football writer Mark Robinson whether or not he thought he could catch Reid during the chase, Petracca was brief and astute.

“No… I didn’t give up (on the chase), but the goal and defending myself – and Clarry – was pretty special.”

AFL 360 presenter Gerard Whateley then asked the inside midfielder if he has corresponded with the Eagle since.

“I messaged him yesterday and said ‘thanks for that partner’ and he responded with a heart full of love, which was nice,” Petracca explained.

“I had a little bit to do with him, obviously he’s a Connor Sports guy with Toby (Greene) and I had a little to do with him before the pre-draft.

“He’s an absolute ripper, a good guy.”

“I think the most important thing is also what it does for the fans there (in Perth); when he does the things that he is doing now, he encourages the whole crowd; Honestly, it’s incredible.”

Reid has the chance to help West Coast to their fourth win of 2024 against Adelaide in Adelaide this Sunday night, while Melbourne will look to bounce back from back-to-back losses against St Kilda that same afternoon.
