Mauricio Pochettino has left Chelsea, just two days after ending his first season in charge of the Stamford Bridge club.

The Argentine leaves a year into a two-year contract, having finished sixth in the Premier League and winning his final five games of the season.

His future was the subject of an end-of-season internal review with Chelsea sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, who will now look for the fourth full-time manager under the current owners since their takeover in 2022.

But Pochettino is leaving by mutual agreement, according to a club statement, following talks with co-owner Behdad Eghbali.

“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we would like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season,” Winstanley and Stewart said in a statement.

“He will be welcome to Stamford Bridge any time and we wish him all the best in his future coaching career.”

Pochettino thanked Chelsea’s ownership group in the club’s statement, adding: “The club is now well positioned to continue making progress in the Premier League and Europe in the coming years.”

Pochettino’s backroom staff also left the club, and Chelsea began the search for a new manager with immediate effect.

Pochettino had expressed frustration at a series of problems at the club during his first season, while Chelsea also underperformed given their considerable investment in playing staff and amid a long injury list.

However, the former Tottenham manager had stabilized the team in recent weeks, guiding Chelsea to European qualification for next season thanks to his improved performances on the field.

The character of Chelsea’s young team had been questioned following the Carabao Cup final defeat to Liverpool and the 5-0 thrashing of Arsenal in March, but Pochettino appeared to turn the tables.

Pochettino was pressed about his future following a 2-1 win over Bournemouth on the final day of the Premier League season, stating: “That’s a question for the owners and the sporting director.”

Pochettino leaves after being denied his first major trophy in English football following defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

The Reds achieved victory in extra time despite having several youngsters in the Wembley final.

“For Chelsea’s history, it is difficult to celebrate (finishing sixth),” Pochettino said on Sunday, after a mixed season, in which his team was humiliated with heavy defeats at Anfield and Emirates.

“But it is the first step to achieving bigger things later. We are so close. Season after season it’s about getting better. We know how we have to compete next season. “We have a young team but now with more experience in the Premier League.”

Todd Boehly and the Blues hierarchy must now name another coach, with the candidate being former boss Thomas Tuchel, who has just left Bayern Munich.

While Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna and Roberto De Zerbi, who recently left Brighton by mutual agreement, have also been linked with the job.

The new manager will take charge of Chelsea’s first pre-season match scheduled for July 23 against Wrexham in Santa Clara, California.

Other games against Celtic, Club América, Manchester City and Real Madrid are also scheduled.
