Three injured and two arrested in shooting at Skyline High graduation in Oakland

The graduation ceremony at Skyline High School in Oakland was marred by a shooting Thursday night that left three people injured and two detained, authorities said.

Emergency crews were called to the school around 7:42 p.m., Oakland Fire Department spokesman Michael Hunt said.

Oakland Police Lt. Robert Trevino told reporters that officers found two adults, a man and a woman, with gunshot wounds. They were taken to a hospital and are in stable condition, Trevino said.

There were reports from the Oakland Fire Department that a third victim had transported herself to an area hospital, but police did not corroborate that detail.

On Friday, Oakland police confirmed that They arrested one person in connection with the shooting and determined that three people were injured in the incident.. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

The shooting occurred at the school located in Oakland Hills at 12250 Skyline Blvd., he said.

Witnesses who were at the event told KPIX they heard gunshots just as the ceremony was ending. TreviƱo said it appeared that several shots were fired.

“Just walking around, you know, taking pictures and out of nowhere all you heard was pop, pop, pop.” said a teenager who was present.

“It’s a graduation at Skyline. It should be a good day, you know? And the next thing you know, we heard gunshots. I mean, at first I thought it was fireworks, but it was gunshots. I saw people start running.” said another teenager. “At first I didn’t think much about it, but then I ran with the people.”

Trevino said detectives are investigating reports that there was some type of dispute that led to the shooting, but it appeared to be an isolated incident.

According to an Oakland information officer, the scene was cleared by 10 pm but there was still a heavy police presence at the school.

The investigation is in its early stages, an Oakland police spokesman said.
