At least five people die in accident on Nakuru-Eldoret highway

At least five people were killed in an accident between a matatu and a truck on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway on Saturday morning.

Police said eight other passengers were admitted to hospital with serious injuries after the 3am crash near Salgaa.

The accident involved a Toyota Hiace of Eldoret Cross Roads Shuttle Sacco from Eldoret towards Nakuru.

Police said that upon arriving at the scene of the accident, the matatu collided with the rear of an unknown mobile trailer which disappeared shortly after the accident.

As a result of the accident, four people died at the scene and another in the hospital.

Eight other passengers were rushed to Nakuru County Referral Hospital with serious injuries.

The bodies were taken to the Nakuru County Mortuary pending identification and autopsy.

The vehicle was towed to the Salgaa police station awaiting inspection while the search continues for the other trailer that escaped from the scene.

This is the latest such accident in the country amid an ongoing campaign to tackle the menace.

Fatal accidents have been on the rise amid calls for authorities and other stakeholders to take action to address the trend.

Statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicate that more than 1,400 people have died and dozens more have been injured in various accidents in the last four months alone.
