Former DA leader Tony Leon believes the party is seeing only modest campaign results in ANC stronghold areas and wants it to instead focus on growing its traditional support base.

Historically, the DA has struggled to grow outside its traditional base.

Mmusi Maimane, former leader and now leader of another opposition party, Build One SA, sought to grow the DA by attracting majority ANC voters, but his success was short-lived. After doing well in the 2016 local government elections amid widespread discontent over Jacob Zuma’s presidency, his attempts failed.
