Inside Man City boss Pep Guardiola’s ‘stellar’ Spanish restaurant in Manchester

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is celebrating a FOURTH successive Premier League title with the Blues. But away from the football field one of his side projects has been winning acclaim too.

Pep is one of the co-owners of city center restaurant Tast, which celebrates the authentic Catalan cuisine of his Spanish homeland. Menus are created by one of Spain’s most acclaimed chefs, Paco Perez, who has an impressive four Michelin stars under his belt for his long-established venues in Europe.

Their talents combined six years ago when Tast first opened on King Street in Manchester, with Pep and Man City CEO Ferran Soriano as well as director of football Txiki Begiristain announced as co-investors. Since then Pep has been a regular visitor at the restaurant, which has also welcomed plenty of footballers and VIPs too.

The restaurant now also boasts an outdoor seating area on King Street, which has become a popular spot on sunny days in the city.

Pep was back at Tast again this week in the wake of his team’s stunning success winning the Premier League on home turf on Sunday. He was spotted at the restaurant ahead of his hosting of an event on behalf of Visit Girona, the region of Spain where chef Paco runs his iconic 2 Michelin star restaurant Miramar.

Paco himself was in town to cook at the event, and explained that the focus of Tast has never been on ‘winning awards’ but instead to provide an authentic taste of Spain in Manchester.

He said: “We have been six years here in Manchester bringing a little bit of Costa Brava into the UK. We’ve tried to bring the authentic Catalan cuisine, it’s not about fine dining, it’s about classic authentic dishes.”

So what can diners expect at Tast? It’s a ‘very traditional Catalan menu’ using famous ingredients from the Costa Brava. That includes stuffed fried squid with duck egg, roasted veg with anchovies and fresh baked cod.

The restaurant can host 120 covers across its three floors, with a casual dining and bar area on the ground floor, a first-floor dining room and a second floor with private rooms offering a tasting menu.

As well as serving traditional Catalan starters and mains, the Tast menu offers ‘tastets’ – small portions and nibbles to savor and to share. It includes classic Potatoes ‘bravas’ for £8, traditional tortilla for £8, tomato salad with prickly pear for £10 and the stuffed squid for £14.

The venue has also become famous for one of Paco’s signature dishes – a Catalan-style ‘rice of the day’. These are cooked in the Mi Brasa charcoal oven, with an intense caramelized flavor at the bottom in the traditional ‘socarrat’ style, priced from £26.

Diners are full of praise for Tast on public reviews site TripAdvisor, where it has a 4.5 star rating. Recent 5 star reviews include from Fran M who wrote: “A wonderful experience. The food was amazing. The rice with shrimp was spectacular, the crème catalana and Girona-style suiso are amazing desserts.” She added: “I will return and I hope very soon. As a preview of a Manchester City match, it is an impressive place.”

Chris K hailed the experience as ‘stellar’. He said: “The food here definitely reminds me of good times spent in Barcelona. The chef’s rice dish with pork was amazing, perfectly seasoned and the meat was perfectly cooked. I would also suggest the jamon iberico croquettas.”
