SS Rajamouli, R Madhavan and Yash extend their heartfelt wishes to the team of THIS Indian film for their big win at Cannes 2024

The 2023 released Kannada film, Sunflowers Were the First to Know, made India proud by winning the La Cinef Award for Best Short Film at the 77th edition of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Soon after its big win, renowned personalities from the Indian film fraternity openly took the opportunity to extend their heartfelt wishes to the entire team of the short film.

Celebrities react to Sunflowers’ big win at Cannes

Chidanansa S Naik’s short film Sunflowers Were the First to Know was crowned La Cinef’s first prize for Best Short Film at Cannes 2024. The special announcement was made on Thursday (May 23).

Taking advantage of the great opportunity, many famous faces of Indian cinema took to their respective official social media accounts to congratulate the entire team.

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli praised the entire team for triumphing at the prestigious film festival. He wrote: “Indian talent crosses borders.” I’m glad to know that ‘The Sunflowers Were the First to Know’ by @Chidanandasnaik won the La Cinef Award for Best Short Film at Cannes 2024! Congratulations to the young people (sic).”

Apart from the RRR director, actors R Madhavan and Yash also took to their official X account (earlier called Twitter) to express their wishes.

Proud to be an integral part of the Kannada film industry, Yash wrote, “Huge congratulations @Chidanandasnaik for winning the La Cinef Award for Best Short Film at Cannes for ‘The Sunflowers Were the First to Know’! I’m proud to see you wearing the Kannada folklore to the world stage and set new benchmarks for Indian cinema!

Actor Shaitaan also posted a heartfelt note and wrote, ”Congratulations to Mr. Chidananda Naik and the entire team for this prestigious honor. May this be just the beginning of an illustrious career with many more extraordinary recognitions and love.”


Apart from the Kannada film, Mansi Maheshwari’s Bunnyhood bagged the third prize in the same category. For the uninitiated, the film is a British film made by an Indian from Meerut.

Written and directed by FTII student Chidananda S Naik, The Sunflowers Were the First to Know is a 16-minute short film. The story revolves around an old woman who steals the town’s rooster, which disorganizes the community. To bring the rooster back, a prophecy is invoked that sends the old woman’s family into exile.
