Security guard shot dead

Another security officer died while escorting city staff to gang-infested areas.

The guard, 26, was with his partner on Friday when they were attacked in Vlei, in Belgravia, Athlone.

They were in a store when they were confronted by alleged skollies.

The victim’s partner was unharmed while his service pistol was stolen.

According to Dr Zahid Badroodien, Mayco Member for Water and Sanitation, the fatal shooting occurred at 10am on Canal Road.

“The exact details of the attack are still being established. However, it appears that the two security escorts were guarding the sewer pumping station while an electrical contractor linked to the Department of Water and Sanitation carried out work at the facility.

“The two security guards, dressed in civilian clothes, headed to the candy store across the small pedestrian bridge where they had been confronted by alleged gang members. At that moment they shot at the security guards.

“They returned fire and unfortunately one escort suffered fatal injuries. “One of the security guards managed to escape unharmed.”

Badroodien says the area has been plagued by gang violence between the Americans and the Fancy Boys.

“Without speculation, it may be that these security guards were caught up in gang-related activity that mistook these security guards for members of a rival gang.”

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said Athlone detectives registered a case of murder and attempted murder.

“The motive is robbery.” No arrests have been made.

This is the second recent attack on city staff escorts. On April 25, two guards were shot dead in Philippi East.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis offered a R100,000 reward for any information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of the suspects.
