Ally McCoist has ruled out the chances of Liverpool launching a title bid in Arne Slot’s first season in charge.

Slot, who will begin his role on June 1 after Liverpool agreed to pay Feyenoord compensation of £9.4 million, will take over as head coach rather than take Jurgen Klopp’s shoes as manager.

Under Klopp, Liverpool’s title hopes faded towards the end of the season, with Manchester City and Arsenal taking the title race down to the wire. The Reds finished nine points behind the champions, although they managed to secure a 2-0 win against Wolves in Klopp’s final game.

Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist expressed doubt over Liverpool’s ability to compete for top spot in the 2024/25 season as Slot adapts to his new role. He suggested Liverpool’s younger players might not be up to the task of sustaining a title challenge against the likes of City and Arsenal.

“I don’t think Liverpool will fight for the title next season, I just have a feeling,” he said on Tuesday. “I’m just not sure the younger guys are ready to take over and move forward again. They slipped a bit (this season) after a magnificent effort,” via the Liverpool Echo.

“Liverpool went down and there was that midweek defeat against Everton. There were little signs that I’m not sure they have the consistency to win the league and fight for the top next year.”
