Bawumia launches Kayayei Empowerment Training Center in Madina

The Vice President and Flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, inaugurated the Kayayei Empowerment Training Center on Tuesday, May 21 in Madina, Accra.

The Center has two training rooms, three pantries, a kitchen, a clinic, 15 bathrooms, five bedrooms, fire extinguishers, CCTV, 24/7 security and a food shed.

Training and hostel facilities under the Kayayei Empowerment Project have been located in different parts of Accra and Kumasi.

The main objective of the Kayayei Empowerment Program is to provide chief porters with technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

The program aims to train 5,000 girls between May and November 2024 with 600 Kayayei per cohort each month and provide practical skills and knowledge to participants to prepare them for specific trades and occupations.

Speaking at the event, Dr Bawumia said despite skepticism and criticism about the project, he knew it would be possible.

“When I made this promise on behalf of the government, many thought it was not a realistic promise. They thought it wasn’t possible. They said it was a 419 plan, but I knew ‘insha Allah’ it was possible for us to do it.

“We had COVID in 2020 and we had to recover, so what we are doing today for Kayayei is part of a whole program of activities by our government to help the poor and vulnerable,” he said.

For his part, the Director General of the Youth Business Agency, Kofi Agyapong, responsible for the implementation of the project, underlined the programme’s commitment to providing accommodation and equipping head porters with essential skills.

“Our program adopts an extensive recruitment process that offers training in crucial skills such as baking, beading, soap making and many more.

“In addition, we cover essential soft skills such as personal healthcare and financial literacy to ensure holistic development,” Agyapong added.

The chief porters also thanked Dr. Bawumia for easing their difficulties.

One participant said: “We encourage you to continue the good work and, by the will of God, we will support you in the 2024 elections.”

Another Kayayei added: “We are very happy because you have done a lot. You have found us a place to sleep and help anyone who wants to learn a trade. Thank you.”
