Revealed: Why Xavi was happy Barcelona sold Robert Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski was on a short list of players that Xavi was happy for Barcelona to sell in the summer transfer window before he was sacked.

The Polish international is joined by Joao Félix, Vitor Roque, Oriol Romeu and Marcos Alonso on Xavi’s list.

Diario Sport reports that Lewandowski’s appearance on the list was one of the reasons why Joan Laporta decided to part ways with Xavi.

Xavi had decided that Lewandowski was unnecessary because he wanted an attacker “with more energy and more intensity”, especially when it came to pressing.

The Barcelona coach also wanted a number 9 that “participates more in the game, creates numerical superiority and helps connect the team collectively.”

Lewandowski’s attitude towards the younger players in the squad also did not sit well with Xavi, according to Sport.

The coach considered that the Pole appears “very distant and serious” with the young players and lacks the “understanding and empathy” necessary for their development.
