Four workers arrested for robbing Mugabe’s residence

Four former employees of Grace Mugabe, widow of former president Robert Mugabe, have been brought before a Harare court on allegations of theft of household items valued at approximately US$500,000 from the Blue Roof mansion in Borrowdale.

The accused are Allen Chinamonya (42), Danmore Chinamonya (35), Samson Karonga and Brighton Bunganirwa (46). The four appeared for the first time before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa and are scheduled to apply for bail on Tuesday.

Defendant’s employment history

State Prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti detailed that Allen Chinamonya, initially a field man, then became a driver from 2004 to 2022. Similarly, Danmore Chinamonya went from a field man to a driver during the same period. At the time of the alleged robbery, Karonga worked as an electrician at Blue Roof, while Bunganirwa worked as a gardener.

Details of the robbery at Mugabe’s residence

According to Mutsokoti, the alleged theft occurred over several years, beginning in 2018, when Grace Mugabe brought 11 containers full of household items from the House of Representatives following the ouster of her husband in 2017. Despite securing these containers with padlocks, the four defendants allegedly conspired to break the padlocks and steal various items, including televisions, clothing, cutlery and bath towels, between 2018 and May 2024.

Grace Mugabe discovered the theft on May 22, 2024, during a visit to select items to donate to the African Liberation Museum. She reported the incident to Borrowdale police on May 25.

Recovered items and legal proceedings

Law enforcement officials conducted searches at Allen Chinamonya’s residence and recovered several items, including a cream-colored men’s suit, a short-sleeved white men’s suit, bedding, and a black and silver television. From Danmore Chinamonya’s house, police recovered a navy blue short-sleeved men’s suit and a floral-printed long-sleeved Zanu PF shirt.

Grace Mugabe positively identified the recovered items as stolen property. The total value of the recovered goods is estimated at just US$2,000, a fraction of the US$500,000 worth of items believed to have been stolen.
