Black ice causes two accidents in ten minutes

Black ice has caused chaos on a stretch of road in Hāwea Flat this morning.

A police spokeswoman said police were notified of two accidents on Camp Hill Road, just 150 meters away, shortly before 8.30am.

The first incident occurred at 8.20am and involved a single vehicle, which reportedly lost control after hitting black ice.

Hato Hone St John assessed two people for minor injuries.

The second accident was reported seven minutes later, at 8.27am, and involved two vehicles, which also hit black ice.

No one was injured in the second accident.

Police have urged drivers to drive according to conditions and be careful of black ice.

“If a stretch of road looks wet or wet, assume it is black ice and let your car slow down on its own; brake gently before reaching a curve,” the spokeswoman said.
