Tapsoba leads Burkina Faso to WAFU B U17 AFCON qualification title

Burkina Faso were crowned champions of the AFCON WAFU Zone B Under-17 qualifying tournament after a vibrant 3-1 victory over Ivory Coast in Tuesday’s final in Ghana.

The Young Stallions had to come from behind at the University of Ghana Stadium, with striker Asharaf Tapsoba scoring a brace to inspire his team to glory.

Despite Ivory Coast dominating for long periods with their technical superiority, Burkina Faso displayed tremendous resilience to prevail in a memorable derby in Accra.

The Ivorians had drawn first blood when Mohammed Diarra equalized just three minutes after Tapsoba’s first goal in the 26th minute to make it 1-1 at half-time.

But Tapsoba restored Burkina Faso’s lead five minutes into the second half, finishing off a superb through ball to put his team back in front.

The Ivorians went all out on their opponents in search of a late equaliser, but it was Burkina Faso who had the last word when Cherif Aboubacar Sawadogo scored 3-1 with a minute remaining to spark wild celebrations.

With this result, the Young Stallions follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and achieve regional success, having won the previous tournament.

Their victory not only gives them the WAFU B U17 title, but also secures them a place in the U17 Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, Nigeria finished third when they defeated hosts Ghana 3-2 in the third-place match played earlier in the day in Accra.
