Sister-in-law ‘hired hitman to murder Cape Town police officer’

A 32-year-old man was arrested for the murder of a police officer.

On 8 September 2022, Sergeant Sithembiso Mnatwana, stationed at Cape Town Central Police Station, was shot as he arrived home in Samora Machel.

Police spokesman Colonel Andrè Traut stated at the time of the incident: “He suffered several gunshot wounds and died at the scene of the crime. “The victim was not armed with his service pistol at the time of the incident and it is still unclear whether he was killed for having access to a firearm.”

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi said the suspect was captured on Monday.

“The Bellville-based Hawks National Priority Violent Crime (NPVC) team, together with the K9 Unit and the Western Cape Flying Squad, arrested a 32-year-old suspect on 20 May 2024 for the murder of A police officer.

“It is reported that during September 2022, Sergeant Mnatwana arrived home from work when he was shot dead. The Hawks investigated the matter and information was received on Monday regarding the whereabouts of the suspect. “The information was put to work immediately and the suspect was eventually arrested.”

The suspect is expected to make his first appearance at Athlone Magistrates Court this morning charged with murder.

Last year, the Hawks arrested Mnatwana’s sister-in-law, who was linked to the murder.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalaseni says: “The case was assigned to the Hawks National Priority Violent Crimes Team. The team’s investigation revealed that Babalwa Rulwa-Mnatwana, married to the deceased’s brother, allegedly hired a hitman to kill the police officer. The motive for the murder is the subject of the Hawks’ investigation.”
