‘Smoking gun’ email shows she knew about Horizon concerns in 2013

Paula Vennells described the cases of wrongly convicted subpostmasters as “very disturbing” in a 2013 email that has been called the “smoking gun” of the scandal.

In the email, the former chief executive confirms that she received and read key evidence about possible wrongful convictions, including that of a deputy postmaster who went to jail.

“I just read the attached files. In addition to finding them very disturbing (I defy anyone not to), I am even better informed now,” she wrote, adding, “I take this very seriously.”

The response was sent more than five hours after he received documents filed by eight deputy postmasters, two of whom had served prison terms, and relates to a scheme designed to mediate their complaints.

One of the files related to Noel.
